Historical Fiction

Ottawa Kansas

The setting for the historical fiction novel I’m writing is in Kansas, the breadbasket of the world, and the United States leading wheat producer. More specifically, in the little town of Ottawa, Kansas, where my great grandparents, immigrants from Austria, settled and made a life together.

Antone Mages, my great grandfather, and his brother, worked on a friends farm, the Strafuss’s, in Homewood, Kansas in the late 1800’s.  Antone married Teresa Strafuss in 1900 and his brother, married Teresa’s sister, Barbara. The story focuses on my grandmother, Christina Mary Mages Crutcher, the seventh child  of thirteen children, and the family dynamics as she grew up. She dreamed of leaving her small town and having her own life and bedroom. Chris died in January 2014, and over the years I had been recording her life planning to write a story based on her life.

A couple of my favorite historical fiction novels are:  Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margaret_Mitchell and Outlander by Diane Gabaldon  http://www.dianagabaldon.com/
